The Gyula Castle Theatre opens its 48th season on 1 July, which will also be the host of an all arts festival this year. In this season lasting until 14 August, the audience is awaited with programmes almost every evening – in Gyula, considered the gem of the Great Plain – performances organized on the stage built in the courtyard of the renaissance brick-masonry fortress and also in the vicinity of the fortress. In addition to theatrical performances humour, classical music, jazz, blues, musical, motion-picture, children’s performance, exhibition, conference, gastronomy and wine festival will be included in the programme of the 48th season.

First night: The Impostor (Az imposztor) the play by György Spiró starring Lajos Kovács as well as two monodramas: “A számkivetett” (The Exile) by Lajos Maróti and “Noé galambja” (Noah’s Dove) by István Nemeskürty. On the second centenary of Franz Liszt’s birth the Christ oratory will be performed.

The 7th Shakespeare Festival between 7 and 17 July welcomes two critically acclaimed productions: A Midsummer Night’s Dream of the South Korean Yohangza Theatre Company and Twelfth Night, or What You Will of the Georgian Rustavelli National Theatre directed by R. Sturua. On the Shakespeare Festival, you can see the play Troilus and Cressida as first night in the direction of Csaba Horváth. During the Shakespeare Festival you can also see The Merchant of Venice directed by László Bocsárdi performed by the Theatre of Sepsiszentgyörgy (Sfântu Gheorghe), you can meet Hungarian writer and director Géza Bereményi, and you can see the best Hungarian Shakespeare productions. The world-famed Lithuania director Oskaras Korsunovas and his company will be present with a new production, Shakespeare’s The Tempest. New to this year festivities, a wine festival is linked with the programmes under the name of Midsummer wine’s dream.

The six-week summer festival starts with a three-day folk-art festival called Multitude at the Körös-Valley (Körös-völgyi sokadalom). As a guest-performance you can see the award winning production of The Hairdresser (Fodrásznő), the Indul a bakterház (The Rascal of the Railroad Shack) with Károly Eperjes, a play by Sándor Márai, the historical play of Pál Závada with the title of Bethlen and the monodrama by István Kocsis about Bolyai. You can get acquainted with a contemporary Hungarian drama on our reading theatre evening. There will be a Literary Humour Festival, where well-known writers read their text.
People appreciating musical theatre may applaud the starring singers of The Phantom of the Opera the musical by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

The Jazz Festival celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, a good reason for inviting twenty artists from the best Hungarian jazz performers and a world star guest, the Victor Bailey Band. On the Blues Festival in addition to the Hungarian elite you can listen to Eb Davis American singer.

This summer it will pay to visit Gyula. The slogan of the theatre is ”During the summer theatre of Gyula awaits!”
